Renewal by Andersen of the Capital Region honors military family with special donation

As we approach Memorial Day, let’s first turn the calendar back to November 11, 2022, on Veterans Day... That’s when Valance Scott visited the sales team at RbA of Capital Region to speak about the importance of Veterans Day.

Valance is from a military family: her husband served in the Vietnam War, and her son Robert, was severely injured while fighting in Iraq. Her experience--including nearly losing her son--is a story she talks about frequently to groups, and it’s featured in the book Unbreakable Bonds: The Mothers of Walter Reed.

Design consultant Wesley Bentzel had first heard the Scott family’s story when he visited their home for a consultation. A veteran himself, Bentzel had served in the U.S. Army and been deployed to both Afghanistan and Iraq.

Hearing about what Valance and her family had been through, and hearing how she was giving back to others struck a chord with him, and he knew he wanted to help. So, he reached out to the general manager for the Capital Region locations, Thomas Costello, who agreed that the team should find a way to honor the Scott family.

“Giving back is who we are at Renewal by Andersen, and Mrs. Scott lives that every day of her life in helping to take care of others,” says Costello.

So, back to November when Valance and Robert went to speak to Costello’s group – and that’s when she found out that her project of two patio doors would be done for free.

As you’ll see in the video, Valance was in tears as she learned of the news.

“I have never received an honor like this before. It really means a lot to me,” she says.

It was an emotional moment for Valance, but also for the Capital Region team. They had given a gift to the Scotts, but really, they too received something; a bond with a family that won’t be forgotten.
